38th Annual
Flowing Wells Tournament
Jan. 15/16, 2004
Yuma made a good showing,
finishing 20th in what is probably the toughest tournament in
Arizona. Top schools from 5A, 4A, 3A, and out of state (Utah,
Texas) are entered in this survival of the fittest affair.
Yuma advanced 5 of their 10
entrants to the second day, which was an accomplishment. Brock
Williamson made it into the semi finals at 105 on Sat., where he
reversed with under 8 seconds left to win 9-8. Francisco Macias,
Nick Johnson, Steve Martinez, and newcomer Jacob Cordova all advanced
into Saturday's action. Johnson won his first match and was then
eliminated in his next match, where a win would have put him in the
medal round. Francisco Macias also lost a close one and was
eliminated just prior to the medal round. Martinez and Cordova
were eliminated Saturday to end the Criminals chances in the
consolations.
Williamson's match in the finals
was a heartbreaker. He got the first takedown, but then fell
behind and couldn't escape a spiral ride throughout most of the
rest of the match. Towards the end of the last period, he hit a
desperation Granby and got caught on his back and gave up the
fall. Brock gave a great effort and was one of two Yuma
area wrestler's to get into the finals, and only one of
four that placed in this tournament.
The three Yuma 5A schools were
represented with Cibola
finishing 12th and Kofa
22nd.
