CHAINGANG WRESTLING CLUB
The Chaingang wrestling
club was started in 1995 as a USA freestyle program for Yuma High
wrestlers to workout and compete in the offseason. It has since
evolved into a year round program in which wrestlers of all ages may
attend and practice wrestling skills. More recently, middle
school wrestlers also use the Yuma wrestling room as their practice
site. They then travel to the Phoenix area for
tournaments. The middle school Chaingang club has won the state
jr. high tournament, and also won the Sunkids tournament which
was held recently in Mingus, AZ.
The middle school team is comprised of wrestlers from the 8 area
middle schools that compete in wrestling in the fall of the school
year. After the Yuma city tournament, those who wish to continue
to compete then start into the program in the evenings held at Yuma
High. After the 8th grade year, members of this team go on to
compete in the high school of their attendance zone, either Yuma, Kofa,
or Cibola.
Coaches for the middle school team are: Terrell Hunsinger,
Francisco Macias, and Mark Surdyka. These men give their
time freely to promote wrestling in the Yuma area.
Freestyle
workouts are being held on Tuesday and Thursday evening from
6:45 until 8:15. Open to all wrestlers from elementary to
high school students. Come and work on technique and get mat time
with other wrestlers. Call Coach Johnson for information
782-5174 ext. 136.
